Why is my website slow? 9 causes and how to fix them

The most common reasons a website is slow, how to measure it for free with PageSpeed Insights and what to fix first to sell more and rank on Google.

A slow website isn’t just annoying: it costs sales. Someone who arrives from Google or an ad doesn’t wait; they hit back and open the next result, which is often your competitor. Google also uses loading experience as one of the signals it ranks pages by.

The good news is that slowness almost always comes from the same few causes, and most can be fixed without rebuilding the site.

First, measure (free, two minutes)

Go to PageSpeed Insights, paste your page’s address and check the Mobile tab, which matters most because that’s how most people visit. Look at three numbers, Google’s Core Web Vitals:

Metric What it measures Good
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) How long until the main content is visible. 2.5 s or less
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) How fast the page responds to a tap or click. 200 ms or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) Whether content jumps around while loading. 0.1 or less

If any of them is red or orange, one of these causes is holding you back.

1. Oversized images

The number one cause. A phone photo weighs 3 to 5 MB; on a web page it should weigh 100 to 300 KB. Fix: resize to the size it’s displayed at, convert to WebP or AVIF and lazy-load the ones further down the page.

2. A background video on the homepage

It looks great on an office monitor, but on a phone with mobile data it delays everything else. If you keep it, show a still image while it loads and skip it on small screens.

3. Too many plugins or widgets

WordPress and visual builders make it easy to pile up sliders, forms, social feeds and chat plugins. Each one adds its own code. List them, remove what you don’t use and replace duplicates.

4. Third-party scripts

Ad pixels, chat widgets, maps, social buttons and analytics tools load code from other servers. A single one can add a second. Load only the ones you really use and, where possible, after the page is already visible.

5. Slow hosting, or hosting far from your customers

Cheap shared hosting can take a full second just to start responding. If your customers are in several countries, serve the site from a CDN, a network that keeps copies in cities worldwide so every visitor gets the page from nearby.

6. No caching

If every visit makes the server build the page from scratch, everything slows down. Caching keeps the finished page ready to deliver instantly. On most platforms it’s a setting, not a redesign.

7. Poorly loaded fonts

Four font families with every weight means a lot to download. Use one or two, only the weights you need, and preload the main one so text doesn’t appear late or jump.

8. Content that jumps

When an image or ad loads without reserved space, it pushes text down and visitors tap the wrong thing. Fix it by setting width and height on every image and reserving space for ads.

9. Too much JavaScript

Some sites send hundreds of kilobytes of code to the phone before showing anything. It’s the most technical item on the list: the fix is sending only the code each page needs, or pre-building pages as static HTML.

What to fix first

If you only have an afternoon, in this order:

  1. Compress and convert images (cause 1).
  2. Remove plugins and scripts you don’t use (causes 3 and 4).
  3. Turn on caching and, if your customers are in several countries, a CDN (causes 5 and 6).

Re-run PageSpeed Insights after each change to see what moved the needle.

When rebuilding makes sense

If mobile still scores under 50 after these fixes, the problem is usually the foundation: a heavy theme or a platform that can’t be optimized further. At that point a lightweight site built from scratch costs less than more patches.
